Check for gas leaks.  Always make sure the gas tank is turned off when not in use.

Take extra care with candles.  Some of us fancy lighting a candle or two to set the mood inside our homes, but we must always remember to never leave them unattended.  Keep lit candles away from curtains or paper, because these burn easily.

Keep flammable items in their proper storage.  The last thing you’d want to hear is that your precocious toddler has just grabbed that can of lapping compound and threw it in the fireplace.  Make sure these combustible substances are well out of children’s reach.

An ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.  Keep your home fire-proof if you don’t want to see your dreams shoot up in flames.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a little extra money stashed away, you may want to look around for beautiful gas fires and have one installed in your living room.  A contemporary style will give your living room a focal point which happens to be stylish as well.  Rustic gas stoves will likewise give off a homey feel.

Get a good quality area rug to add a little bit of personality to your living room.  Positioning it at a slight angle to your furniture will give it more character.

Use books to decorate your living room- literally.  You can lay your favorite hardbound books on your coffee table to act as a centerpiece.  Don’t overdo it, though.  You don’t want to end up with clutter.

Giving your living room an updated look isn’t really supposed to be such a herculean task.  With a little imagination and resourcefulness, you’re sure to be able to give new life to an otherwise drab living room.
